Chesapeake Bay Years

1981 thru 1994

Until Jim moved from the Binghamton, NY, area, the bulk of his work was the flat-bottomed duck.

In 1981 Jim relocated to the Chesapeake Bay area. He rebuilt his aviary directly in front of his studio, all facing south overlooking Cox Creek, a tributary of the Chesapeake.

In 1982 Jim began teaching the carving and painting of waterfowl at various locations around the United States and Canada. In 1984, he expanded his own studio, situated on 1800 feet of natural sandy beach, to include a spacious facility where he taught until his departure for Florida in 1994. His innate ability to instruct students of many different skill levels, in an environment of rugged shoreline and marshes, enticed students from all over the world to study at "Greenwing University".

By this time his challenge had moved on to creating larger decorative sculptures of full-bodied waterfowl interacting in flight. He also incorporated stone, metal, glass and Lexan into his unique compositions.

An underlying goal was to redefine the way his sculptures were viewed by the public as well as by his peers. In this he has also succeeded.

By anyone's definition his work moved out of the realm of "craft" and is recognized as a true art form.

Collectors from around the world own pieces of his work, and many are displayed in museums.
